The new train started running at the beginning of October one time per week according to a memorandum of understanding signed by DB Cargo and the Hefei municipal government month earlier. Cargo delivery is organized by Trans Eurasia Logistics, a joint venture between Deutsche Bahn and Russian Railways. Running the distance of 10,600 km via Dostyk, Moscow, Minsk, and Warsaw takes 15 days.
Dr. Jürgen Wilder, CEO of DB Cargo, said, that the project proved rail freight delivery via trans-Eurasian land bridge as a competitive alternative to other modes of transport.
Hefei is a big freight hub, so the new connection creates an opportunity for rail cargo transportation from eastern and southern Chinese regions to Germany. The fact should motivate shippers to use the route actively.
The both partners consider the project as the revival of the Silk Road. In particular, Hefei's municipal government drew attention to the fact that the new rail connection is a contribution to Chinese Government Initiative “One Belt – One Road.”
